Health & Insurance
Carry it before you need it, not after.
Most people relocating to Vietnam carry international health insurance rather than relying solely on the public system, which is built primarily for Vietnamese nationals and isn't the easiest to navigate without the language. This isn't a sign the local system is bad — it's a practical choice most long-term foreign residents make.
Public vs. private
Public hospitals exist everywhere and handle genuine emergencies, but language and system-navigation can be real friction points for a foreigner without local support. Private hospitals, concentrated mostly in Ho Chi Minh City and (to a lesser extent) Hanoi, are set up specifically for international patients and tend to be where expats go for anything beyond routine care.
City differences
Private healthcare infrastructure drops off noticeably outside the two biggest cities. Da Nang has a reasonable but smaller private healthcare presence; Hue's is the most limited of the four, and a meaningful number of Hue residents factor in travel to Da Nang or further for anything beyond routine care. Worth weighing seriously if you have an ongoing condition that needs regular specialist attention.
Insurance
International health insurance that covers medical evacuation is the common choice among long-term foreign residents, treated less as a luxury and more as a practical backstop for anything serious. Confirm what a given policy actually covers in Vietnam specifically — not every international plan treats Vietnam the same way as, say, Thailand or Singapore.

Common questions
- Do I need health insurance to get a visa or work permit?
- Requirements vary by visa type and can change, so check current requirements for your specific route rather than assuming. Regardless of the legal requirement, most long-term residents carry it anyway.
- Is private healthcare available outside Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi?
- To a more limited degree. Da Nang has a reasonable private healthcare presence; Hue's is the smallest of the four cities, and residents there often plan on travelling for anything beyond routine care.
